The James Center for Student Success and Advising supports professional development programming and opportunities for students to meet the requirements while earning their teacher education degree.
A minimum of 20 Professional Development experiences must be completed by the end of the Student Teaching Semester and related to one or more of the NC Professional Teaching Standards and your personal goals for student teaching and your first year as a beginning teacher.
Identify Experiences & Opportunities
Engage
Engage is a portal for students to identify campus events and activities, including professional development opportunities. The Reich College of Education Engage page is a good source for Professional Development specific to education majors.
Online Opportunities
There are a number of free online resources that you can use to complete your Professional Development Program Requirements.You may select a maximum of four PD experiences from online, asynchronous sources. App State Online students may select more than four. Please visit with your Academic Advisor to discuss a Professional Development plan.
Tracking Your Professional Development
After attending a professional development experience, students must document the details of the event and complete a reflection about the experience. Please make a copy of our Professional Development Tracker tool to record your experiences each semester. At the end of your student teaching semester, you will submit your completed tracker, with 20 PD experiences, as a course requirement in AsULearn.
Professional Development in your Teaching Career
Professional development is a licensure requirement for teachers in North Carolina to maintain their educator license. The North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards are the basis for teacher preparation, teacher evaluation, and professional development. Each of these will include the skills and knowledge needed for the 21st century teaching and learning.
