edTPA is a summative, performance-based assessment that is completed during student teaching.  It assesses a teacher candidate's ability to plan, teach, and assess a unit of instruction.  A passing score on edTPA will be required to receive a North Carolina teaching license starting in Fall 2019.

Licensure Exams

All teacher education candidates must complete required licensure exams before they can be recommended for licensure (Professional Educator's Initial License). It is strongly recommended that candidates take their required licensure tests before their student teaching internship,  and tests must be taken before they complete student teaching.

Most candidates will complete Praxis exams.

Elementary Education candidates must complete two tests prior to being recommended for licensure:

  • Pearson Test 203 - Mathematics Subtest OR Praxis Test 7803 - CKT Math Subtest
  • Pearson Test 090 - Foundations of Reading

Special Education - General Curriculum candidates must complete three exams prior to being recommended for licensure:

  • Pearson Test 203 - Mathematics Subtest OR Praxis Test 7803 - CKT Math Subtest
  • Pearson Test 090 - Foundations of Reading
  • Praxis 5543
