Mountaineer Steps to Teaching

Mountaineer Steps to Teaching is a process that guides pre-service teacher educators through the processes of becoming a teacher.

First Steps

The First Steps to Teaching meeting is one in a series of meetings for all newly declared and pending declared majors.  Students enrolled in EDU 2000 will receive an invitation to the First Steps to Teaching.

This meeting is one of the requirements for submitting your official Application to Teacher Education. This is an invitation-only meeting and newly declared students will receive notification of the dates and times of the meeting via their App State email.

Students will be introduced to key faculty and staff in the Reich College of Education and will interact with them through individual sessions in order to develop an understanding of what is needed to be successful as a newly declared teacher education major.

Second Steps

All teacher education programs that lead to licensure or a similar credential require multiple site-based field experiences throughout the program as well as on-campus and regional meetings prior to and during student teaching.

After you are accepted to Teacher Education, you will attend an orientation to learn about the next steps on your journey to becoming a teacher. We will provide an overview of field experiences, review criminal background checks and licensure exams, and introduce you to professional dispositions, professional development requirements, and edTPA.

Third Steps

Student teaching is the capstone experience of teacher preparation. Courses in teacher education have presented you with a variety of ideas and opportunities to learn about teaching. Now it is time for you to put the knowledge, skills, and experience to practice.

You must participate in student teaching full-time for one semester.

The semester prior to Student Teaching, you will attend an informational meeting to learn about the student teaching placement process. You will be provided a general overview of student teaching and be informed about required paperwork and deadlines.
